Sabina Yasmin, the “Kokil Konthhi” of our hearts as many say, began her flight by singing for radio and gramophone companies as a child. Soon reigned supreme in the sky of Bangladeshi music industry. For the last 32 years, she proved to be one of the few vocalists who are equally sought for in Bangladesh as well as in India. Until today, she has recorded more than 9 thousand songs. Equally proficient in modern songs as well as folk songs. Furthermore, as a member of national cultural delegations she performed in China, Japan, Hongkong, Thailand, Malaysia, India, UAE, Uzbekistan, Greece, Germany, Sweden, Norway and UK. She has also made numerous concert tours in USA, Canada, Italy, France, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Pakistan and Australia.
Her remarkable achievements include:
The Shadhinota Puroshkar (The Freedom Award), the highest award in Bangladesh, in addition to the prestigious Ekushey Padak (The February 21 Medallion) and Jatiyo Cholochchitro Puroshkar (the National Film Award), which she has received ten times till now. In India, the Bengal Film Journalists' Association has also honored her with their Best Playback Singer Award.
Aside from the awards that she has won, the words of all the singers and music directors whom she has worked with, all clearly reveal and express that she is one of the most unique singers Bangladesh has ever seen. Music director Alauddin Ali is full of praise of her musical talent. Ali says ‘She can pick up any note and she can sing any kind of song. It takes a very versatile singer to be able to sing such a wide variety of songs over such a long period of time and she has been doing that with a flawless precision for ages. We will not produce a complete singer like her in the next 100 years.’
Wow…No wonder Sabina has recorded songs alongside greats like RD Burman, Hemanto Mukhopadhay, Bhupen Hazarika and Ajay Das. Her popularity abroad is something that cannot be expressed in words.
An incident from 1991 might help illustrating her popularity. She was performing at a big show in Murshidabad. Big stars from Mumbai and other parts of India were there to perform as well. Sabina and Andrew were set to take the stage after the Indian performers. When they got on stage it was around 3 in the morning and finished around dawn. They quickly got off stage and got into the car that was waiting for them, Andrew remembers: that the car would not start as Sabina’s fans had lifted the car off the ground. "Some of them had missed the show and they would not let us leave unless they got a glimpse of her," says Andrew.
In the end, they were appeased after Sabina decided to sign some autographs and speak to them. The respect she gets abroad has brought
great honour to our contry.
Sabina and her Family:
Her family played a major role for her great success. Eminent director Gazi Mazharul Hossain who has known her since she was a toddler says that Sabina was bound to become a great singer as her family had a prodigious music talent. Her father Lutfor Rahman was a lawyer but also sang Rabindra Sangeet ‘very well’ says Mazharul. Her mother Moluda Khatun was also a gifted musician though she never performed. Naturally, Sabina began to pick up tunes with the harmonium, at a very early age. Though she was the naughtiest out of her 5 sisters, family support and proper guidance from an early age allowed her to make proper use of her capacity and be successful. ‘Her father used to encourage her to try to pick up songs on her own. He used to sing side by side with her so that she could observe the techniques. Her mother was also a big influence as she used to take little Sabina to all the musical programmes she went to. As her mother was a good singer, Sabina was influenced by her a lot,’ says Hossain.
Sabina’s original journey in the music world began at a singing competition for children at the age of 9. It was her first time so she was a little nervous but when She got up on stage and sang without fear, people declared her a natural and she won the competition!
Her first real break into professional music however came in the year 1963. She sang a song composed by Kazi Anowar Hossain in the radio. At the time, she used to sing with stars like Shahnaz Rahmatullah and Sabiha Mahbub. In 1964, when the television center was unveiled, Sabina became regular on popular music shows like Notun Shur, Hiramon etc.
Sabina was given her first break to sing as a playback singer by acclaimed music director Syed Altaf Mahmud. One of the first things Asif asked her when he met her for the first time was how she started singing in movies. Asif remembers that she mentioned she used to sing in the chorus but it was her dream to sing the lead. Altaf Mahmud used to live in her neighborhood of Shaheedbagh. Knowing Sabina's secret desire, her mother used to always urge Altaf Mahmud to allow her to try it out. Then one day in 1967, she got her first break in the movie "Agun niye khela" and she was an instant hit. That’s how she entered the professional music scene.’
Sabina was dedicated to her family and she loved spending time with her family. She used to love listening or spending time with her parents. She was very family oriented and she used to like spending time at home and always tried to solve any problem her family member’s were facing. She deeply loved her parents and used to tell everyone how big an inspiration her family was to her.’
Other Facts:
She has a son and a daughter. Sabina and her daughter had an album out last year named: protichchobi. Furthermore, she was married to Amir Hussain Babu - a movie dance director but then divorced and married Suman chatterjee the Kolkata singer.
Suman Chattapadhyaya
(born 1950), also known as Suman Chatterjee is a Kolkata-based modern Bangali singer-songwriter, guitarist, and poet. Furthermore, he shot to fame in the 1990s with albums such as ‘Tomake Chai’ and Base Anko. Soon, however changed his name to Kabir Suman in the early 2000s, after marrying the Bangladeshi singer Sabina Yasmin and embracing Islam..
His contemporary and socially consicous songs draw upon both Bengali adhunik and Western folk and protest music. His work has been a major influence in the development of the Bengali Jeebonmukhi Gaan ("Songs from Life") genre, which has influenced bands like Chandrabindoo, and has grown to become a major movement in contemporary Bengali music. Most of his songs are played with a synthesizer. Like many Bengali singers, Suman has also recorded albums of Rabindra Sangeet starting in the late-1990s.
Kabir’s initial training was in Indian classical music and Rabindra Sangeet, and he picked up Western folk forms while living abroad. From 1975 to 1989 he worked as a broadcast journalist working overseas, living in Germany, where he worked for German International Radio, and in the United States, where he worked for Voice of America's Bengali language service. He finished his second contract with German International Radio in 1989, and returned to Kolkata. He released his first album, Tomake Chai, in 1992. Since then he has released over ten albums, his most recent one being Dekhchhi Tokey in 2005.
So it is settled, Hubby and Wifey both sing. I can imagine both singing for each other.
Lastly, Sabina has 4 elder sisters, but 3 of them are more noted and sing as well, they include: Farida Yasmin, Fowzia Khan, and Nilufar Yasmin.
Nilufar did masters at Dhaka university and she is the mother of Agun. An other well-known singer.
Sabina as a Person:
Her passion for her work is electrifying and it would inject a new motivation to do the best in whoever worked with her.
Even if she was given a tough note to pick up, she would never complain, she would always try hard to make it work. She would always find a unique way to make her music sound good. Her main aim was always to get the best out of things. She would never complain, no matter what scale of notes was assigned to her. It’s this drive to do her best in everything, which has propelled her to achieve so much.
she was also very sensitive as could never stand the pain of another person. Usually stars develop a superiority complex after achieving great success, but not Sabina. Her friends and colleagues say that she did not have a single drop of pride or arrogance in her. She would hardly ever get mad at anyone; she was a mountain of patience.
She was very sweet and her words were always so polite and heart warming. She lives a very simple life and really likes the simplicity in things. She tries to do her best to ease the suffering of others. It’s this warmth in her which makes her so special.
Sabina as a big Contributer to our Music industry:
Sabina was also a great teacher of music and has helped many great musicians and directors of today find their way. She has helped many musicians correct their problems with tones and always guided the younger generation of musicians along the right path to success. Eminent song writer Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul is one of them. He met Sabina Yasmin for the first time in 1976 when he was an unknown artist. But it was Sabina who first gave him a break by hearing out his musical compositions and actually singing his songs. His first album was sung by her and she created a musical masterpiece out of Imtiaz’s hard work.
Imtiaz says that she will remain an immortal beacon of hope for our music industry. Today he and countless others owe all their success to her. ‘Whatever I have achieved today since that day when I met her in 1976 has been because of her. If she had not sung my songs back then, I would never have been able to become who I am today. Me and the music industry are forever indebted to her for being just herself.
Sabina today....
Is suffering from a form of blood cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma with persisting problem in her liver; she could just have food prescribed by the physician but she was not given chemotherapy due to derangement of her liver function, according to the hospital source. News of her ailment has shocked millions of her fans, fellow artists, musicians, cultural activists, politicians, journalists and uncountable of her well-wishers. Many of them rushed to the hospital to see her and inquire about her latest condition.
Sabina was admitted to hospital in mid-June and was diagnosed with the deadly disease. She underwent tests and operation by specialized doctors led by Dr. Khademul Islam.
Her sister N Yasmin told a satellite TV channel on Tuesday that Sabina’s relatives decided to take her to Singapore for better treatment.
Therefore, ailing singer Sabina Yasmin was flown to Singapore. She will undergo treatment at National Cancer Centre there.
4 lac TK. has been channeled from the Chief Advisor’s relief and welfare fund to aid the artiste’s better treatment. She is being flown abroad under government initiative.
Besides, TV entertainer and maker Hanif Sonket, tuner Alauddin Ali, artiste Kumar Bishwojit, playback artist Adrew Kishore have initiated on behalf of the fellow artiste and musician to lay their contribution as a gesture to save Sabina’s Life.
News of her ailment shocked expatriate Bangladeshi living in the USA as well. Runa Laila, another legendary voice of the subcontinent, now in USA also expressed deep concern and prayed to the Almighty for Sabina’s well being. Furthermore, Runa Laila in a Bangladeshi-American Convention, at Patriot Center, Virginia dedicated five songs for Sabina Yasmin.
Heres a pic I found of Sabina and Runa Laila
My sources indicate, Sabina has received her 2nd chemotherapy.
Let's all pray she gets better soon because shes not only a great singer, but an inspiration and definately the pride of our music industry.
Thanks for reading, and Take care.
