For those of us not too familiar with Bangla music, here are some passing comments. Please feel free to send your own comments and additions, which can be used for updating the list. Since this is a Bangla Music forum, only a few singers from Calcutta / West Bengal could be included. Unlike singers from Calcutta, Bangladeshi singers are not very well-documented and publicized on the internet.

(Aadhunik - means modern. The lyrics reflect music and contemporary ideas. Aadhunik has great variety because it includes songs that were "aadhunik" 40 years ago. Voice often follows harmonium. Tabla often used as percussion)

(Pop / Band music - "multi-dimensional" music as band members compose and improvise on their own instruments of electric guitar, drums, keyboard, and bass guitar).

* Abbasuddin (folk, deceased) -Shaped Bangla music as one of the earliest
Bengali singers, whose recordings are still available. Father of Ferdousi
Rahman, and founder of his "Gharana" of music.

* Abdul Alim (Folk):folk singer, was born on 27 July 1931 in the village of
Talibpur in Murshidabad district. His father was Mohammad Yusuf Ali. He did not have much formal education. While at elementary school he heard a gramophone record and became attracted to music. He took music lessons from a local instructor, Syed Golam Ali, and earned a reputation as a singer while quite young. Later he went to Kolkata and became acquainted with abbasuddin ahmed and kazi nazrul islam. He took lessons in folk music as well as classical music from bedaruddin ahmad, Ustad mohammad hossain khasru, Momtaz Ali Khan, Abdul Latif, kanailal shil, Abdul Halim Chowdhury, etc. He recorded first two songs, 'Tor Mostafake De Na Mago' and 'Aftab Ai Baslo Pate', for a gramophone company in 1943.After partition Abdul Alim settled in Dhaka where he became a radio artiste. Abdul Alim also sang on television and for films and recorded about five hundred songs. He was highly regarded for his mystic murshidi songs. He received a number of national awards, such as the Ekushey Padak, Purbani Chalachchitra Puraskar, and Bangladesh Chalachchitra Sangbadik Samiti Puraskar. He died on 5 September 1974 in Dhaka.

* Anjan Datta - From West Bengal, India. Built on style started by Shuman
Chatterjee. Rich voice. "Anti-institutional" lyrics. Few from Bangladesh
come close in his class of music. (Songs: 244-1139)

*Artcell (or ArtCell) is a progressive metal band of Bangladesh. The band is arguably the first progressive metal band of the country and usually experiments with tunes from other metal genres such as grunge and thrash. The current band members were school friends in Dhaka. Ershad used to be the guitarist of a band named Tantrik back in 1999. Current vocalist, Lincoln, joined Tantrik just before the group disbanded. They were looking for a bassist and a drummer, when through friends, they met Cezanne and Shaju. The members later renamed their band to Artcell in August 1999 and the band was officially formed in November 1999.

* Azam Khan - Undisputed "Guru" of Bangla pop music. Guru even to other
bands. Energetic, sometimes off-tune voice. Plenty of drums and electric
guitar. Strong loyal following. By far the most popular pop-singer. Has
both romantic songs and songs inspired by pessimism and futility. Depicts
real life rather than make-believe optimism. (Songs: Bangladesh)

* Baby Nazneen - Ranks high in popularity if not in talent. Brought
to Dhaka as child singer by a late president.

* Bhupen Hazarika - Although non-Bengali, has contributed much to Bangla
music over two decades. "Leftist" lyrics. Good stage performance, and
highly respected.

* Chandidas Mal (19th century) Last of the performers for compositions by
Ramnidhi Gupta

* Cryptic Fate - The story begins in February 1993, when Wahed and Sarfaraz conceive the idea of forming a metal band. They quickly recruit school friends Shakib, Farshed and Iresh as bassist, drummer, and singer, respectively, and the original line-up is complete. Shakib names the band Cryptic Fate. As the story goes, Shakib was praying when the name came to him. Cryptic Fate is a Heavy Metal band from Bangladesh. Originally influenced by classic 80s metal, the band’s sound has continued to mature and evolve into a unique style melding all sub-genres of metal. Recent times have seen Cryptic Fate experiment with softer and darker aspects of rock music, but with the release of its third album, “Danob”, Cryptic Fate returns to what it does best – brutal, no-holds barred heavy metal.
Original lineup:Vocals – Iresh Zaker, Guitars – Waheduzzaman Khan, Guitars – Khwaja Sarfaraz Latifullah,Bass – Chowdhury Fazle Shakib, Drums – Farshed Mahmud

* Different Touch - Gained poplularity in mid-eighties. Most songs in their
first album were good.

*Dolchut and Bappa Mozumder - His first album ‘Tokhon Bhorbela’ was released in 1994. And since then, Bappa has never looked back. In the following years, Bappa and Shanjib worked together and eventually formed their band ‘Dolchut’ and released their duo album in 1997. It was not a big success in the beginning, but Dolchut later enjoyed success with their famous song ‘Gari chole na’ from their second album.
In the meantime, Bappa was constantly thriving to bring out his second solo ‘kothau keu nei’ which was released in 1998. It was a success. And the years followed with few successes. Personally for me, I would say the best album was ‘Dhulo pora chithi’, where the song ‘Pori’ earned the admiration of the music industry.

* Dolly Shayontoni - "Aadhunik" singer - became popular within last few
years. Sweet and natural voice. Easy lyrics and catchy music. First album
was good. Second album could not do full justice to her voice.

* Fakir Alamgir (pop)- Voice known more more for strength rather than being on tune. Lyrics brash and down to earth, and identifies well with the
masses.Fakir Alamgir, Feroz Shahi, Ferdous Wahid, Azam Khan are sometimes known as the Four "khalifas" because of their pioneering contributions to pop music after independence.

* Farida Parveen - Unrivalled in Lalon Geet of folk music. Known for three
decades.

* Fatema-tuz-zohura (aadhunik) Respected singer for three decades.

* Feedback (band)- Active for more than 20 years. Good musicians. Very
professional and polished band.

* Ferdous Wahid (pop and aadhunik)- Good voice. Started as pop
singer, but gravitated to aadhunik. Good voice. Has some classical
training.

* Ferdousi Rahman - Heir to rich tradition established by her father
Abbasuddin. Known for three decades.

* Feroz Shahi (pop music) - Accomplished singer with good voice.
Well-suited to singing folk songs, which he is famous for. Country mourned
loss when he passed away in 96, while singing "Ek miniter nai bhorosha.."

* Haimanti Shukla (aadhunik, West Bengal)

* Happy Akhand (pop, deceased) Survived by his brother Laki Akhand, after untimely demise in 80s. (Song: Ai Nil Moni Haar)

* Hemanta Mukherjee (aadhunik and Rabindra sangeet, deceased)- Illustrious vocalist and music composer. Recorded numerous songs over many decades. Never had any classical training - all talent. Most respected singer of all time. Demise in 1992 after a tour of Bangladesh.

* James (band music) - Vocalist and Guitarist of Feelings, a popular band.
Became popular recently after several new releases. Energetic, excellent
rock vocals. Pessimistic lyrics. Plenty of electric guitar and drums.

* Jewel (pop, deceased)

* Kazi Nazrul Islam (composer and lyricist, deceased) Came during 1910s
with genius of song writing and compositions. Apart from traditional Hindusthani classical and western style of music, adapted a lot of tunes from folk music of other places, as well as tunes from Middle east. Through him, Bengali non-folk music first experienced Islamic style of music. Not very organized in recording his music. The songs, which are known as "Nazrulgeeti today, contain songs which are supposedly not his creation. After he took a premature retirement from music, the tunes of
some of his songs were tampered with. Popular exponents of his songs include Sachin Dev Burman, Manabendra Mukhopadhyaya, Firoza Begam, and Anup Ghosal. Nazrul's songs reigned supreme, even over Rabindra Sangeet, until 1950s.

* Kishore Kumar (aadhunik) - Playback singer from West Bengal, India.
Popularity grew as he diversified to the Hindi movie industry. Untimely
death in the 80s came at the height of his career. One of few singers to
"yodel." (Songs: Ai Je Nodi)

* Kumar Bisshojit (aadhunik) - Good voice, playback singer for movies.
(Songs: Choturdola)

* Lata Mangeshkar - Has sung many Bangla songs, although famous for having recorded the most number of songs (mainly Hindi) in the world. (Songs: Mormoina go)

*LRB (Little River Band or Love Runs Blind) - Band by Ayub Bacchu of Souls. Excellent electric guitar, and strong and powerful voice.

* Manna Dey (aadhunik)- Bengali singer from West Bengal, India. Very intricate voice and has very strong classicalbackground. Strength is emotional articulation and feeling. Ranks close to or above Lata Mangeshkar in talent.

* Miles (band) - One of the first Bangla bands, together with Souls, and
later, Feedback. Initially became popular for replaying English songs.
Popularity continued after the release of their own Bangla songs. Hamen and Shafen (the main musicians) are sons of Feroza Begum, the Nazrul geeti singer.

* Prometheus: Another short-lived band from the early nineties.

* Rabindranath Tagore - undoubtedly one of the strongest influences on
Bengali music. Trained in Hindusthani classical music style. Later, during
his stay in England came across western style of music, especially operas
which had influenced young Rabindranath to write and compose operatic
dramas in Bengali. Throughout his life, he was exposed to Bengali folk.
Although Rabindranath's father and elder brothers also composed songs,
Rabindranath was by far the most versatile with his pen and piano. Wrote
almost 2500 songs and a few musical dramas (like operas) which are widely popular more than 50 years after his death.

* Ramnidhi Gupta (19th century composer) Composer and lyricist. Put
romantic lyrics on Hindustani classical music

* Renaissance (band music) - Rock band with Reggae style beat. Two members are professors of MBA in Dhaka University.

* Rizwana Chowdhury Bonna - Popular for "Rabindra
Sangeet."

* Rockstrata - Emerged in mid-eighties as one of the first hard-rock bands

* Runa Laila (aadhunik)- Unrivalled as most talented lady singer -an asset
to the nation. Songs in numerous languages. Well-known beyond the
Indo-Pakistani subcontinent. Sang in the Bombay industry for a while.

* Sabina Yasmin (aadhunik)- Popular for several decades for patriotic
songs. Appears frequently on TV. Most popular playback singer for movies.
Hails from "Yasmin Family of music, which has given rise to Nilufer Yasmin
among others. Sweet voice.

* Sachin Dev Burman (aadhunik, West Bengal) Shaped Bangla music from times when recording technology was first available. Rahul Dev Burman continued father's tradition in movie industry and otherwise.

* Shagor Sen - From West Bengal. Deep voice suitable for the Rabindra
Sangeet he is famous for.

* Shahnaz Rahmatullah - (aadhunik) popular for two decades.

* Shalil Chowdhury - Respected music lyricist and composer from West
Bengal. His songs were sung by Hemanta Mukherjee and Lata Mangeshkar.

* Shumon Chatterjee - Pioneer in his field of Bengali urban music in
Calcutta. Excellent voice. Inspired by Bob Dylan, among others.

* Shuvro deb (aadhunik and pop)- Good vocals. Nasal tinge. Romantic
ballads. Popular with young female crowd. Playback singer for movies.

* Sohrab Hossain (Nazrul Geeti)

* Souls - Emerged in late 70s in Chittagong. Gained popularity over more
than a decade. Served to launch Ayub Bacchu and Tapan Chowdhuri. Have been less visible in the 90s.The current line-up: Partho Borua – Vocal and Lead Guitar Nasim Ali Khan – Vocal ,Masum – Key Board, Ashik – drums ,Rana – Bass guitar, Anan – Percussion

* Tapan chouwdhuri (aadhunik / pop) - Went solo after beginning career in
Souls.

* Warfaze - Warfaze is a heavy metal band from Bangladesh with elements of metalcore and progressive metal/alternative rock in some of their songs. They were one of the first such bands of this genre in the country. The emergence of Warfaze and other bands such as Rockstrata defined a new horizon in Bangla music.

* Winning: (Band) Popular from early eighties to this day. As in many other bands, most of the founding members have already left.

Zinga Goshty:Zinga Gosty (Zinga Group) is the first known pop music group of Bangladesh. It was formed in 1963 by a group of young college students of Chittagong College. Led by Late Shafaat Ali - the group's erstwhile leader, Zinga soon became very popular with its modern style tunes that revolutionized the Bangla POP/Band industry. Najma Zaman, later famous as a pop singer, joined Zinga Goshty. Najma entered the Bangla music industry with the hit song "Tomari Jibone". EMI Pakistan record label brought out the first smash hit album with "Tomari Jibone" in 1966. Zinga was the first band to perform in the first Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) TV pop music Show ever broadcast. Zinga also initiated the careers of noted singers like Kaderi Kibria and Linu Billah. In the late 70's, Zinga had already become the common name in Bangladeshi pop music scene. During this era Zinga gave inspiration to other noted pop singers of Bangladesh namely Azam Khan, Ferdous Wahid, late Firoz Shai.
By Late 70s and early 80s Zinga completely turned into a family based musical band and was often compared to the famous bands in the west like BeeGees, Beatles, Abba & Boney M. Zinga in late 80 & early 90s participated in several POP Video music competition in the Netherlands, Australia, UK , and won several awards for Bangladesh.
