The Band
’71 aspires to create music that people can relate to with their emotions. The band’s strength is in the fact that its members are from varied and completely different backgrounds. The collective influence of these different music minds and tastes is what makes its music interesting. Among themselves, ‘71 has extensively experimented with different musical instruments, including the violin and traditional Bengali instruments, and have also explored music within various genres, including Baul, Celtic, Rock, South American music and Tagore and Nazrul “Shongeets”. The influence of all such explorations is thus reflected in its music.
’71 takes great inspiration from Bangladeshi history and its rich culture, and is deeply aggrieved and concerned with the current political and social issues obstructing the county’s development. The number ’71 represents struggle and emotions. It also has spiritual connotations to millions of Bangladeshis. The band is therefore aptly named to reflect a political, physical and spiritual struggle, and the emotions that accompany them.
‘71 believes that music is an outlet for the abovementioned sentiments and is primarily for self-appreciation and enjoyment.

Biography and history
A nameless band was born when the musical tastes of a trio of teenagers coincided in 2003. The band was the brainchild of two college friends, Ashik and Jawad. Tonmoy joined very soon afterwards and Auni followed a few months later. It started out with a few fun gigs and concerts, and steadily snowballed into an immense passion-trip for its members. However, after a year, its activities halted due to various impediments.
Its members reunited in the winter of 2005, and the chemistry was instantaneous. It composed its first song during that period, and the band was christened ’71 soon after. The ride has been far from smooth. Its members are scattered around the globe for their own academic pursuits, and only get to meet during annual vacations. For these reasons, the band has taken it slow. The members regularly communicate and exchange ideas on music and compositions through the net, and devote the dormant time for individual-explorations on music, which they later assemble to construct and compose music when they meet at vacations.
Future plans/ Ambitions/Aspirations
* To musically attack politics and social issues in Bangladesh
* To explore different realms of spirituality and emotions through music
* To promote goodness
